Odds To Win Broncos @ Chargers game

Qualcomm Stadium, in San Diego Monday October 19th, as the irregular hosts Chargers are expecting the visit of the still undefeated Denver Broncos. San Diego, 2-2 so far this season (1-1 at home), and Denver, still unfamiliar to a defeat in their first 5 games, have split the last 16 games they’ve played against each other since 2001.

The Chargers lost two weeks ago (they rested the previous week) against Pittsburgh, 38-28. The Steelers had a fast start in the first half and only had to hold on for the rest of the game to maintain their lead. Pittsburgh was already leading at halftime 21-0, and enlarged their lead by adding another touchdown later on, so their bad fourth quarter had no meaning in the final result.

On the other hand, the Broncos keep riding up as they defeated the New England Patriots in a thrilling overtime last week, with a field goal that closed the result at 20-17. With less than five minutes for the end of the game and Denver trailing 17-10, Broncos’ quarterback Kyle Orton had a wonderful 98 yard drive that tied the game. Then, in overtime, Matt Prater kicked a 41 yard field goal that finally gave them the victory over the Patriots.

With that win, Denver improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1998, their last Super Bowl season. With the Pats leading 17-7 by halftime, the Broncos woke up and had a great second half, both in offense as in defense, as they scored 13 points (including the winning field goal) and held off New England, who are now 3-2, to zero points in both the 3rd and 4th quarters.

Last time they met on December 28th, 2008, the Chargers crushed the Broncos 52-21 after Denver defeated San Diego by a mere point, 39-38, three months before. This season stats can be a good guide to show how tight this game will be: in offense, San Diego has more passing yards (295.5 against 237.8), while Denver has the edge on rushing yards (139.0 against 53.8). The difference comes in defense, where the Broncos have allowed 252.8 total yards, against the 365.8 yards allowed by the Chargers.

Will the Broncos be able to keep their winning streak or will the Chargers take advantage of their home and the support of their fans? Hard to tell, but since Denver seems to be on a hot streak while San Diego is still battling to find themselves as a team, the win should go the visitors way, and give the Broncos a nice 6-0 to end week #6.
